Enterobius Vermicularis

Pinworm infection (Oksiuriasis, Enterobiasis) is a parasitic infection that primarily affects children, where the worm Enterobius vermicularis grow and multiply in the intestine.

Course of the disease

Worm Enterobius vermicularis causes pinworm infection is called enterobiasis or oksiuriasis. Infection usually occurs through two stages. First, the worm eggs are moved from the area around the anus the patient to the clothing, linens or toys. Then through your fingers, worm eggs moved to another child's mouth and finally swallowing. Worm eggs can also be inhaled from the air and then swallowed. After swallowing worm eggs and larvae hatch in the small intestine and grow into adult worms in the large intestine (the maturation process takes 2-6 weeks). Adult female worms move to the area around the anus (usually at night) to lay her eggs in the skin folds of the anus of the patient. Eggs stored in a sticky material. These materials and the movement of the female worm that causes itching. Eggs can survive outside the human body for 3 weeks at normal room temperature. But the eggs can hatch more quickly and the young worms can get back into the rectum and lower colon.
symptom

Symptoms include:

- Intense itching around the anus
- Cranky (because of the itching and interrupted sleep at night)
- Lack of sleep (usually because of itching that arise in the evening when the adult female worms move to the anal region and lay her eggs in there)
- Decreased appetite, weight loss (rare, but can occur in severe infections)
- Itching or irritation of the vagina (in girls, if adult worms into the vagina)
- The skin around the anus becomes raw, rough, or an infection (from scratching).

Complication

- Salpingitis (inflammation of the ovaries channel)
- Vaginitis (vaginal inflammation)
- Re-infection.

Diagnosis

Pinworms can be seen with the naked eye in the anus of patients, especially within 1-2 hours after the children fall asleep at night. Pinworms are white and thin as a hair, they are actively engaged.

And worm eggs can be obtained by way of masking tape stuck in the folds of skin around the anus, on the morning before the children woke up. Then the tape was affixed to the object glass and examined with a microscope.
treatment

Pinworm infections can be cured by a single dose of anti-parasitic drugs mebendazole, albendazole or pirantel pamoate. The whole family in one house should be taking the drug because of re-infection can spread from one person to another.

To relieve itching, can be applied to anti-itch cream or ointment to the area around the anus as much as 2-3 times / day.

Although it has been treated, reinfection often occurs because the eggs are still alive continue to cast into the feces for a week after treatment. Clothing, bedding and toys should be frequently washed to eliminate the remaining eggs.

General steps that can be done to control pinworm infection are:

Wash hands before eating and after defecation
Cut nails and nail to maintain cleanliness
Wash sheets at least 2 times / week
Wash the toilet every day
Avoid scratching the anal area because it could contaminate your fingers and any objects that are held / touched
Distancing the hands and fingers from the nose and mouth.

Prevention

It's important to maintain personal hygiene, with emphasis to wash their hands after defecation and before preparing food. Clothing and bed linens in the patient should be washed frequently and dried in the sun.
